Office chairs

Fit your office chair to your desk

A chair that fits the desk starts at the floor. Set your feet first, then the seat, then check the room under the top.

Feet

Start with your feet

OSHA’s computer workstation guide starts at the floor: The seat should be comfortable and allow your feet to rest flat on the floor or footrest. Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Raise or lower the seat so that the entire sole of the foot can rest on the floor with the back of the knee slightly higher than the seat of the chair Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Knees

Knees, hips and the desk

The guide describes the seated position like this: Knees are about the same height as the hips with the feet slightly forward Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

If your desk is fixed and your feet hang, a footrest closes the gap: Feet are fully supported by the floor or a footrest may be used if the desk height is not adjustable. Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Then look under the top. Clearance for the legs, under the desktop, should generally be between 20-28 inches (50-72 cm) high. Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Base

Five legs and casters

Check the base before you check the cushion. The chair should have a five-leg base with casters that allow easy movement along the floor. Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Footrest

A chair with a footrest, or without?

A pull-out footrest lets you lean back with your legs up between calls. It makes the chair heavier and deeper, so it needs more floor behind the desk.

Without one, the chair is lighter and tucks further under the top.
